a friend of mine had a man break into her house over the weekend and she was sexually assaulted. the man also stole her laptop, money, and her phone. not only is she a friend of mine, she also lives a few blocks from me. I hadn't heard from her since friday and durrock called me today and told me some sketchy details about what had happened to her. then when I opened today's Metro paper, the story was on the second page. durrock sent me this link, which is a channel 6 news report of the incident:

I joke about living in the hood, but it's stuff like this that sickens me and really does make me worry when I'm home alone. you know, burglars rarely just break into your house. they watch you. they study your habits for days or weeks and they know when you're home, who you live with, when those people are most likely to live there, etc. and every time I come home there are sketchy guys who watch me walk into my apartment, yell stuff at me, even follow me on their bikes. they know that me and christina live here alone, and that really frightens me. and, I've walked to my friend's (who was assaulted) apartment numerous times, and I never quite felt safe but thank god nothing happened to me. and, the fact that in the news report they said that there has been a string of unsolved sexual assaults in south philadelphia recently.
I wish I had enough money to move back downtown but right now this is all I can afford :(

the past few days have been full out hangouts, partying and just randomness.
party friday and saturday at christine's with ugo, mike, ty, and joseph. sunday field trip to target, hangout with jen and durrock at my place afterward. monday night club meeting/hangout at my place, tuesday night searching for bars with christine on walnut, ate dinner at a really nice bar/lounge, late-night hang with durrock and thomas at my place...

day 1 (friday, 4/20): departed nueva jairsay at around 12:30. arrived at around 3:30. hung out at lauryn's for a bit, freshened up and went grocery shopping with the fam. her parents let me pick out vegan food and they paid for everything!! so sweet.
day 2 (saturday, 4/21): got pretty and went to dc. parked at the greenbelt station and rode the metro to georgetown. once in georgetown we forgot how to get to the shopping area, so we walked and walked and walked up and down the main street trying to find it. looked up sephora's address on lauryn's sidekick, and proceeded in the right direction. made stops at H&M, urban, sephora, l'occitane (sp?), etc. were FAMISHED so we found an italian place. holy crap. it was one of those places that is just like a door outside and when you open it you have to go down some stairs. well, when we got down there we found fountains and statues and gold fixtures and doilies everywhere. it was FANCY. our lunch bill was over $40, and they gave us spoons to twirl our spaghetti with. everyone stared at us and we felt like julia roberts in pretty woman. walked around some more, took metro to chinatown. got starbucks, walked around chinatown and met a really nice bum who said lauryn should be on toothpaste commercials because her teeth were so nice, and that I looked like a doll. oh, and he taught us about the significance of beads in "catholicism and islamism". yes, he said islamism. after we got home jordan spent the night and we watched tv.
day 3 (sunday, 4/22): NIC AND CALEB!!!!!!!! ok so first lauryn and I went to the columbia mall because she wanted to find a new scent. after trying on every single perfume in sephora, she decided on some lotion from the body shop haha. I got pomegranate lemonade from the nordstrom cafe and it was realllly good. then we went back to her house, changed, and went to nic and caleb's grandma's house (which is where they're staying, and it's right up the street!). their mom, dad, sisters (angel, whom we'd never met and lydia), cousins (hunter and lorelei), and lydia's boyfriend chris were all there. we just hung out until about 1am.
day 4 (monday, 4/23): lauryn had to go to class in the morning so while she was there me, nic, and caleb explored. we went to ft. meade and checked out our old houses and took a bunch of pictures at burba lake. when we went to the px they got made fun of for the way they dressed :( then we went back to their grandma's house and waited for lauryn. we drove around for a bit and then came back to lauryn's and played guitar hero for a while. then we all went to denny's (me, lauryn, nic, caleb, lydia, chris, angel, and jordan). most of us didn't get food and we just talked and laughed and doodled on paper (and on each other). then lauryn, jordan and I went back to lauryn's and played guitar hero.
day 5 (tuesday, 4/24): lauryn and I took nic and caleb to the inner harbor/fells point. they'd never been before!!! we took a water taxi to fells point and they'd never done that, either so it was quite an experience. we went to the daily grind and got drinks and bagels with hummus. then we just walked around, got suckered into giving money to homeless people and took lots of pictures. while waiting for the return water taxi we stood under a tree for some shade. well, after a little while nic exclaimed "ew! something just hit me in the head!" and we were like huh? and he turned around and he had bird poop in his hair!!!!! oh man. if that had happened to me you KNOW I would have died, but seeing it happen to somebody else was the funniest thing ever. we tried cleaning it out with my bottled water and it worked a little. hahahahaha. on the way out of baltimore we got wayyy lost in some very sketchy neighborhood near the ottobar. lauryn didn't want to stop and ask for directions because it was THAT bad. when we stopped at a light I rolled down my window and asked a lady in the car next to us where we should go, and she had no clue. we eventually stopped at a decent looking gas station and got directions, and all was well. then we dropped nic and caleb off at their grandma's, and lauryn and I myspaced it and then jordan came over and we watched life aquatic at 2am.
day 6 (wednesday, 4/25): went to the columbia mall with lauryn. bought a couple shirts and a necklace. then we hung out at the house and eventually at around 10 nic, caleb, and jordan came over for a sleepover. we played guitar hero for HOURS, ate, drew pictures, talked. jordan ended up not spending the night, and caleb and I stayed up until about 5:30!
day 7 (thursday, 4/26): lauryn and I went out to lunch at a little Thai restaurant in Hanover called "Little Spice", I think. I got the traditional pad thai with peanuts and tofu instead of chicken. it was AMAZING. then we went to target to get white shirts for the displace ME event. came back home, hung out for a bit and at around 10 went to muvico to see Vacancy with nic and caleb. it was okkk. the we dropped them off at home, came back to lauryn's and jordan came over until about 3am.
day 8 (friday, 4/27): took caleb to get his nose pierced! we drove around for literally hours today because we couldn't find the shop we wanted to go to. I called justin because I knew he was familiar with red octopus but we were so lost (we were in VIRGINIA!) that he couldn't really help us. eventually we went back to lauryn's and ate some food, then we got mapquest directions and went to red octopus in landover. came back to lauryn's, then at around 10 went to nic and caleb's. we spray-painted the white shirts that we bought with a big red "X" on the front, and spray-painted the displace ME logo on the back in black and red (Chris made the really cool stencil!). then we (me, lauryn, chris, lydia, nic, caleb, their mom and angel's husband) watched the Invisible Children documentary. came home at 2ish. then jordan came over and we ended up going to bed at around 5.
day 9 (saturday, 4/28)-(sunday, 4/29): lauryn and I got up at 9 to pack our bags for the Invisible Children Displace Me rally. even though we got up so early we still ran late. we had to stop at walmart to get our crackers and water (all you were supposed to bring was cardboard to build a hut to sleep in, saltine crackers to eat, and 1.5 liters of water). it ended up being me, lauryn, nic, caleb, alaina, angel, mitch, lydia, jamie, and chris that went. we left at noon, took the metro and got to the mall (the grassy area by the washington monument, haha) at around 12:30. it was so funny riding the metro with sleeping bags, cardboard, etc and we were all wearing the shirts we spray painted with the big red X and the "displace ME" logo. when we got to the monument we were some of the first people there so we had a lot of land to choose from. Chris picked a spot and we plopped our stuff down. one of the filmmakers filmed us coming up with the plan for building our hut, and the construction of it. Angel and I came up with the plan but since we had 10 people and not a lot of cardboard, we were only able to make a sort of veranda. and since there weren't many people there, we didn't have other huts to draw inspiration from. anyway, we built our hut and chilled, met some people and talked, relaxed, watched the videos they were showing on the big screen, participated in some footage for the full-length DVD that they're making, got interviewed, etc. A representative from Gulu (one of the areas in Northern Uganda that we're trying to help) was our guest speaker, and he gave a really good motivational speech. they made us wait until almost 9:00 to eat (we didn't eat ALL day!!), and they made "the women" get the water, but you could only take 1 bottle at a time for your camp, and then walk all the way back to the water station to get more for everyone in your camp. then "the men" had to get the crackers. I had never craved saltine crackers more in my entire life than I did at that moment. holy crap. when it was bedtime lauryn, caleb, alaina, nic, and I squeezed under the veranda and the others volunteered to sleep outside. we didn't have enough cardboard to cover the ground, so we had to lay our sleeping bags directly on the cold, slightly wet, hard ground. oh yeah, it rained a couple times throughout the day. anyway, caleb and I accidentally got our sleeping bags mixed up and the one I was using (his bag) SUCKED. it was hardly insulated and I froze all night. I seriously slept in 10-minute intervals and kept waking up because I was so cold. I was wearing black leggings, my displace me tshirt and a thin hoodie. it sucked so bad. they woke us up at 6am to start clearing the field and everyone had to be gone by 10. since our hut collapsed halfway through the night it wasn't too hard to tear it down haha. we collected all our gear and were on the metro by 7am.
they said last night that we had the 3rd highest turnout- LA had 12,000; NYC had 8,000 and we had 6,000. I seriously couldn't believe that I was sleeping on the ground under some duct taped cardboard on the mall by the washington monument eating crackers and drinking water. it was such a great experience (no sarcasm intended). when we got off the metro we piled into our respective cars after one final group shot. then angel dropped me and lauryn off and we said our goodbyes to nic and caleb, because I thought that was the last time I'd see them (they're going back to TX next week).
well we got home and I had a pb&j and applesauce, then lauryn napped and I started editing photos. nic texted me and said he wanted to come over and play guitar hero, so him and caleb came over around 2 after I took a very short nap. we talked for like an hour and then I kicked their butts at guitar hero haha. they had to be home by 4 to go out to dinner, so we dropped them off and gave them big hugs. we talked about having a roadtrip around the country next year or possibly a european adventure, haha.

life is going pretty good right now.
I applied to 2 colleges (FIT and the Art Institute of Philadelphia) this week.
I like jasmin living with me because she forces me to be more productive, like fill out college stuff. I'm going to finish my application for the University of Philadelphia today and send it out tomorrow.
work is stressful. I mean, not only do I work at the cafe but susan (manager) makes me take care of her personal life, and all business matters. I have to keep the records for payments, payouts (when we have things delivered, ie coffee), I fill out all paperwork, place all the orders everyday, take care of inventory, make deposits into her bank account, fax everything for her, etc. I like working there because I come home with $40+ cash everyday, but it's a lot to worry about.
jasmin and I have been doing a lot of healthy (mostly organic and all vegan) cooking lately. she's not vegan but we make sick food so she likes it! the other night we made the most amazing homemade spaghetti sauce with roasted red peppers, organic tomato paste, garlic, zuchini, spices, and balsamic vinegar.

I'm in maryland right now staying with lauryn for a few days. she called me friday and said "I have an idea. I'm going to drive to New Jersey and see you". she spent the night and we left late saturday night to come back down to maryland. she has gotten me addicted to nip/tuck (she has seasons 1 and 2 on DVD). today I saw val-ray for the first time in like... a year and a half. basically since I moved to jersey and she moved to florida. lauryn and I spent our new years eating vegan nachos at the paper moon diner and driving around baltimore listening to the appleseed cast. I think I'm going back the 4th.
and now, a brief review of 2006!
JANUARY:
- went to greenwood lake for the first time and met lots of jasmin's friends.
- went on a 1-day trip to maryland and had a blast with lauryn and justin.
FEBRUARY:
- totaled my dad's surburban.
- former schoolmate from florida (michelle mccall) died.
MARCH:
- dad left for afghanistan; grandma, mike, raquel, and alex all visited.
- saw between the buried and me and etid with jasmin, kevin, and derek.
- went to a party at ilyana's and made out with derek.
- spring break: jasmin and I roadtripped it from new jersey to ohio, ohio to maryland, and maryland back to new jersey. stayed with my grandma in ohio, lauryn and justin in maryland.
APRIL:
- got my monroe piercing.
- marlee's bday party.
MAY:
- bamboozle with jasmin!
- I turned 19.
- met jordi in nyc and ate bangin pb&j sandwiches at peanutbutter & company.
- went down to maryland to help raquel move out of her dorm. hung out with lauryn and george.
- saw apk in redbank, nj with raquel.
JUNE:
- lost my first pair of Dior shades the day I got them at seaside heights
- met james
- went down to maryland for lauryn's graduation. met kamal.
- spent a week in ocean city, md with lauryn for senior week.
JULY:
- dad came home from afghanistan for a 1-week break
- attended "classy" party in brooklyn; met krystle in-person for the first time
- bought plane tickets to egypt
- brandon pruitt died
AUGUST 20-DECEMBER 19:
EGYPT!!!
- made lots of friends, met jasmin's amazing extended family, took fashion design classes, tried lots of new foods, learned some arabic, rode camels, saw the Great Pyramids of Giza, spent time at the mediterranean sea and the red sea, spent time in Agamy and Alexandria, celebrated jazz's 19th birthday...
I hope you all enjoyed your new year's celebrations. my resolutions are to actually save my money, get a car, work like it's nobody's business, save more money, and finally go to fashion design school.

it's 12:10am right now in Cairo. Nessma, Ahmed, Mohamed, Lamees, Shamen, Zenab, and Mona all came and went. I will be boarding a plane at 10am in Giza, and will be in New York at 3pm (holy 7 hour time difference). I can't even explain in words just how amazing, fun, exciting, etc this trip has been. I never felt like a visitor in Egypt; I always felt like a resident. Jasmin's relatives said I was a part of the family, and I really felt like it. 95% of people I met in Egypt were sincerely nice to me, and were willing to do anything in their power to help me or make my stay better. I will miss the extreme hospitality of everyone. I will miss the late late late nights, since Cairo never sleeps. I'll miss all the cafes, my school, my kittens, my "family", Zamalek...
I can't wait to come back.
and, after living in a place for 4 months, you really learn a lot. I decided that for my last entry in Egypt, I would compile a list of random things I've learned that I think are interesting/funny/etc. ready? ok.
